Updated c.v. on LondonArt
https://www.londonart.co.uk/accounts/artist/my_cv.asp
Using a combination of drawing, painting, stenciling and print, Sophie creates decorative pieces whilst maintaining a sharp fine-spun quality throughout. She endevours to maintain a sparseness in negotiating space contrasted with areas of intense line work and pattern. Digital photography also plays a strong role in Sophie reaching her artistic conclusion; scratchy line work and typography is added by building up and stripping away layers. A storyteller at heart, Sophie is especially passionate about using pencil and paper, and her artwork is, by turn, original, colourful, delicate, striking and highly personal. Most recently, her exhibition work has enabled Sophie to cross over from the commercial world of advertising and design consultation and back into the world of fine art.
A freelance Illustrator and Graphic Artist for ten years, Sophie Gartell first studied fine art at Camberwell before graduating with a 2:1 in Illustration from Brighton University in 2001. Sophie's diverse working methods using a wide range of media has made her work popular with a rapidly increasing client base both in Europe and in the United States and Canada. She has designed card and wrap ranges for Roger LaBorde and Woodmansterne; her designs have been licensed for Christmas decorations Stateside; she has been an editorial Illustrator for the Telegraph Magazine and The Evening Standard as well as designing book covers and painting ceramics ranges in London.
An up-and-coming artist with a quirky yet elegant style, Sophie has exhibited extensively throughout London and the South-East, most recently at the prestigious Air Gallery in the heart of Mayfair. Sophie's highly collectable pieces are strongly influenced by the darker side of childhood with tenderly-applied graphics offset with splashes of neon and motif. A carefully controlled pastel palette is complimented by her love of bold block colour; a characteristic along with strong portraiture work which Sophie is fast becoming recognised for. Her natural ability to manipulate colour and form combined with her sensitive approach to translating human emotion on to a two-dimensional picture plane, results in some exquisitely realised observational illustration. An amalgamation of intricate pencil work, text and figurative imagery, Sophie strives to find a balance between the sensitive and the off-putting, with her highly narrative pieces often punctuated with haunting messages.

Joseph Gartell @ Air Gallery
Showing alongside me at Air is my brother Joseph:
Joseph Gartell presents his debut show “Menagerie”; an exploration of line and form in the natural world. Joseph is an artist living in London and specialising in figurative work. Joseph likes to closely observe and then rebuild his subject, reinterpreting it with the aim of arriving at something exciting, fresh and new.
http://www.josephgartell.com/
His prices for original pen and ink drawings on a vast scale - the largest being his iconic 'Bison' rendered entirely in blue/black biro - start in the region of £6000. Each piece takes months of planning and thousands of hours to apply each layer of penwork. Such is the intensity of line and form that representatives from BIC pens have been to view the exibition twice already this week.

STORE IN A COOL, DRY PLACE
Drawings of a Storyteller
Contact: Sophie Gartell
T: 07950 747525
Venue: Air Gallery, Dover Street, Mayfair
Exhibition Dates: 23-28th May 2011
Private View: Tuesday 24th May 2011
Intricate pencil work and bold motif is punctuated by haunting messages in Sophie Gartell's work on show at the prestigious Air Gallery during the last week in May. Loosely based on the themes of isolation and abandonment running throughout many of our best-loved tales, Sophie creates characters carefully realised through a controlled pastel palette offset with splashes of neon.
Using a combination of drawing, painting, stenciling and print, her pieces evoke a beautiful child-like world in which wolves and birds, rabbits and trees hint towards the darker side of fairytale.
The re-imaginings of 'Hansel and Gretal', 'Snow White' and 'The Babes in the Wood' are, amongst others a perfect balance between the delightful and the sombre. A storyteller at heart, Sophie is strongly passionate about using pencil and paper and her artwork is by turn quirky, elegant, colourful, delicate, sharp and highly personal. The marriage of image and word has enabled Sophie to produce decorative pieces whilst maintaining a strong narrative throughout.
A freelance illustrator for ten years, Sophie graduated with a B.A. in Illustration from Brighton in 2001.
She has enjoyed a career in editorial illustration, card and wrap design, product design and commission-based paintings. Diverse working methods has made Sophie's work popular with an increasingly varied client-base, and she has worked extensively with publishers both sides of the pond.
Although viewing alongside her brother's own show at the same time, 'Store In A Cool Dry Place' is Sophie's first solo exhibition. With two shows running parallel, this is an exciting opportunity to view a brother and sister artist collaboration who work in very diffent ways.
'Store In A Cool Dry Place' runs from Monday 23rd May to Saturday 28th May 2011. For more information, or to schedule an interview with the artist, please call Sophie on 07950 747525, or email at sophie.gartell@hotmail.co.uk
